If you’d like to keep your electric bill low this summer in St. George, installing a programmable thermostat and monitoring your energy usage are helpful ways to get started. However, there are many habits you can cultivate to make a bigger impact over time. Consider the following tips to save money and energy this summer.

1. Lower the Water Temperature

While a hot, steamy shower feels amazing on a cold winter day, it’s not as necessary on a hot day. In fact, hot water isn’t the greatest for the skin either. Protect your skin and your finances by lowering the water temperature a few degrees. When the system isn’t working to raise the water temperature as high, you’ll save money and conserve energy.

2. Use Surge Protectors

Assign at least one surge protector to each room in your home. Do your best to plug all of the devices into that one surge protector. When the room isn’t being used, it’ll be easy to unplug the surge protector and save energy.

3. Try a Passive Cooling Strategy

At the top of the morning when it’s still cooler outside, open the windows. Allow the fresh air to circulate into your home. Then, place fans in front of the open windows. Allow those fans to run for two hours. After two hours, turn off the fans, close the windows and draw the curtains in order for the home to remain cool for awhile. This process allows you to keep your home cool without turning your AC on.

4. Use Larger Appliances Less

Scale back on how often you use larger appliances like the oven and the dishwasher. Prepare meals and plan your meal preparation process to include items that can be consumed without reheating (salads, wraps, etc.). Instead of eating a hot bowl of oatmeal, opt for overnight oats instead. As you get creative in the way you use your appliances less, your bill will reflect those changes.
